The portable power unit was a first for the company’s catalog. I have spent hundreds of nights outdoors & consider myself a gearhead. The design director recognized that I would have the knowledge to lead charge on designing a product that would be durable, environmentally conscious, & fit the design language of the company.
I was in charge of the design & scalable design language for the 300W, 550W, & 730W units as part of the off-grid power ecosystem.
Inspiration
Our audience is outdoorsy folks who also want the luxury of electricity anywhere.
The power unit should be able to be used for daily use, power outage emergencies, or be pulled out of the gear closet for a wild adventure.

Iterations
In House Prototype
The casing is made with 60% post-consumer recycled plastic. We were proud to achieve a high percentage of recycled material & keep the product durable.
It was also a conscious decision to keep all parts of the body & handle a matte finish. During the manufacturing process, gloss finishes require protective sheets of plastic applied to them during assembly, those plastic sheets are single use & discarded post assembly.
