APC Smart-UPS

Ultra-high power density, On-Line power protection with scalable runtime options.

Scalable Power

One of the best selling products at Schneider Electric got a new look.

For these three lines of UPS, we created specific design distinctions between the premiere, top, & mid-level models.

My role was to create the new design language for the Smart UPS products, both the On-Line & Line Interactive products.

The Process

The Design

Of course there were design constraints. These were a few.

I. The bezel needed to be removable to replace batteries.

II. Bezel needed to be open enough for proper airflow.

III. The HMI needed to fit within a very specific, small, area.

IV. Use little to no single use plastics & use recyclable materials.

V. Needs to be scalable design language; there are currently 3 sizes of UPS but possibly larger ones in the future.

Iterations

Inspiration

We wanted to portray strength through triangles. We looked toward brutalist architecture for inspiration to convey stability & power.

Iterations

The final design incorporated the I-Line center stripe with plenty off truss-like structured ventilation.

Final Design

Company Inspiration

A few months before our design kickoff, we had just released the I-Line Breaker Design. It was designed to be a visual for energy flow & connectivity between breakers & the breaker box.

We wanted to bring that concept of connectivity to our design as it belonged to a greater modular system of interchangeable & interconnected parts.
