The Kida Coat
When a Facebook Marketplace post came across the top of my feed for Malden Mill’s fleece, I couldn’t help but scoop it up. With the excess scraps I was able to craft the dog, Kida, a shoulder season jacket.
The Backstory
A retired employee of former Malden Mill’s had an incredible amount of fleece for sale on Facebook Marketplace & was selling at an incredible deal.
As the new owner of a shorthaired dog in December, I knew I had plenty of fleece to spare to craft a jacket that would be warm enough for our active days & compliment her mobility.
The Design
The purpose of this jacket is to be worn while adventuring & exercising.
Using 200wt. fleece to cover the majority of the body & chest is ideal while utilizing the 100wt. around the neck and back to prevent overheating.
The Process
The process involved draping & patterning a custom jacket on the pup.
After measurements, I roughed out a muslin first draft.
I then translated to a first round mockup in 200 wt. scrap fleece to see how the stretch of the material & fit the dog. There were some edits needed to optimize the fit such as a longer & narrower turtleneck, a slightly narrower chest strip, smaller arm opening, & more darts on the edge of the rear skirt.
